A Winning Combination:
Sight Words, Frequently Used Words, and Thinking Skills
Our FunDog apps use words from the "300 Most Frequently Used Word List". Many of these words are referred to as "sight words" and can help children build fluency. Other common, or frequently used words, are often found in books, newspapers, and magazines. When readers know these words automatically, they can focus on understanding the meaning of a text rather than trying to figure out what each word says.
An interesting statistic is that readers see sight words in about 65% of all written text- books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, etc. You can see the importance of knowing sight words in order to be a successful reader, one who reads smoothly, effortlessly, with expression, and understanding.
